Those caricatures are fading now that a new generation rediscovers a richly diversified socialist tradition. It includes not only evolving 50cialist theories of government and economics, but also theories of literature, history, philosophy and the natural sciences. Socialists brought their distinctive concerns to all areas of human thought and action, just as non-socialists brought theirs. Socialism also includes the rich debates over (1) struggles and governments seeking to take societies beyond capitalism to something better, and (2) how best to ally with parallel struggles against social exclusions of women and minorities and for a green new world. Finally, socialism, especially since 1989, contains intense self-criticisms responding to the USSR’s implosion and major social changes in China and beyond. From the broad ferment italism—not the socialist-influenced New Deal—created that middle class. In 2020 the coronavirus-triggered economic crash exposed still another failure of U.S. capitalism. A profit-driven medical industrial complex failed to produce or stockpile widely known means to fight viral pandemics (tests, masks, ventilators, hospital beds, etc.). The U.S. government likewise failed to intervene in time to compensate for private capitalism’s failure. Losses in the economic crash since early March 2020 exceed by far the costs to produce and/or stockpile what was needed. Capitalism’s profit drive and government complicity with that fetish proved monumentally inefficient, a point stressed in many socialist critiques of capitalism. By 2020 capitalism’s flaws and failures had accumulated (albeit hidden by a debt-fueled stock market boom and a surge in poor, lowwage service jobs). A globally weakened system enabled the coronavirus to trigger system-challenging economic declines. In that weakening, the 1970s were a crucial turning point. Over a century of rising U.S. real wages had ended then. The end followed from rapid PRODUCTIVITY (WHAT WORKERS GIVE EMPLOYERS) HAD KEPT RISING WHILE REAL WAGES (WHAT EMPLOYERS GIVE WORKERS) STAGNATED. THAT CAUSED EVER-WIDENING INEQUALITIES OF INCOME AND WEALTH, BUT ALSO OF POLITICS AND CULTURE. within the tradition, new forms of socialist theory and practice flow. Socialism’s renewed activity, productivity and excitement are the concrete ways in which socialism returns again and again. Contributing to socialism’s current renewal is capitalism’s current decline. This should surprise no one. Socialism always was capitalism’s critical shadow, the product of those who understood and/or fell victim to its flaws and failures. As with all previous social systems, capitalism always had both admirers and critics. Some of the latter eventually combined with the system’s victims to generate socialism—a yearning to do better than capitalism and a conviction that that was possible. When capitalism's flaws and failures surged, so too did socialism. In the 21st century's first two decades, capitalism exhibited egregious flaws and failures. Extreme instability exploded in 2000 (dot-com bubble burst), 2008/9 (subprime mortgage default crisis) and 2020 (coronavirus crisis).
